Description
This course provides an overview of the Greek Church Fathers and their contributions to the theological tradition. Topics may include the nature of theology; the relationship between theology, Scripture, liturgy, and the spiritual life; the development of the Greek theological from the pre-Nicene to the post-Nicene period; and the contributions of Greek Fathers to development of core Christian doctrines. Priority will be given to a selection of primary texts from one or more of the following: the pre-Nicene period (e.g. Ignatius of Antioch, Irenaeus of Lyons); the Nicene period (e.g. Athanasius of Alexandria, Eusebius of Caesarea); and the post-Nicene period (e.g. Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Cyril of Alexandria, Maximus the Confessor).
